A Case Report of Acute CuSO4 Poisoning

Abstract

A thirty-three-year old female was admitted because of severe epigastric pain and
vomiting after ingestion of topper sulfate (about 10 gm) for suicidal purpose.
Hypotension, jaundic, hematuria and melons developed, thereafter. Acute copper sulfate
intoxication is rare in Korea but common in India. (about 1/3 of poisoning case in India)
The result of the hematological examination and that of bone marrow study were
compatible with hemolytic anemia. Kidney biopsy was performed on her left lower pole
and it's finding revealed toxic nephrosis. 14 days after admission, generalized edema
with ascites developed, but there was no oliguria. Her urine became clear after cortisone
acetate therapy(250 §· for 3 days and tapered up to 7 days). The was discharged
without any complication oh 29 th admission date, but proteinuria in trace and anemia
were noticeable up to discharge.
